In 1981, entrusted by the former Ministry of Forestry, the Society held the UNIDO Conference on Wood-based Panels and Furniture Industry, which was well received by the Foreign Economic Commission and UNIDO. The conference was an important international conference jointly agreed by UNIDO, the Ministry of Foreign Economics and Trade and the former Ministry of Forestry, approved by the State Council and organized by the Society. The successful holding of the conference further enhanced the international status of CSF.
In September 1987, CSF, UNESCO, MAB (Man and Biosphere) and Northeast Forestry University co-hosted the International Conference on Forest Hydrology in Harbin. The research status and methods of forest hydrology in China and the research of forest hydrology in the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany were exchanged. In 1988, CSF organized the 18th Meeting of the International Poplar Commission in Beijing. The meeting was attended by 132 delegates from 19 countries. Foreign experts were invited to participate in academic discussions by some branches of the Society.
From October 17, 1990 to October 20, 1990, the International Conference on Chemistry and Utilization of Tree Extracts was held in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. It was hosted by CSF and organized by the Research Institute of Nanjing Chemical Industry of Forest Products. There were 113 delegates and 125 papers were published. The research achievements of rosin, turpentine, tannin, raw lacquer, essential oil, pigment and bioactive substance were exchanged and widely discussed on the conference.
From November 22, 1990 to November 25, 1990, the Eucalypt International Conference was held in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province. There were 153 delegates and 156 papers exchanged. The conference was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the introduction of eucalypt in China. In fact, it was also the 10th Academic Exchange Meeting of the Professional Eucalypt Committee. The meeting showed the achievements and benefits of eucalypt introduction, breeding, processing and utilization in China over the past century.
In April 1992, the International Conference on Sand Development and Utilization and the Founding Conference of National Sand Control and Desert Industry Society were held at the Fragrant Hill Hotel. It was initiated by the former Ministry of Forestry and the China Association for Science and Technology, and organized by CSF. Qian Xuesen attended the conference. The central topic of the conference is: Cooperate and exchange for the benefit of mankind by relying on scientific development and utilization of sand.
From October 19, 1994 to October 22, 1994, the Asia-Pacific Conference on Genetic Improvement of Forest was held in Beijing. There were 61 domestic delegates and 29 foreign guests, and 150 papers were received. Eight aspects including breeding principles, strategies, genetic resources and conservation were discussed and exchanged on the conference. From November 30, 1995 to December 5, 1995, CSF held the International Conference on Pine Wilt in Beijing, with more than 70 Chinese and foreign experts. The delegates affirmed the achievements in scientific research and control of pine wilt disease in China and suggested strengthening the international research network. From October 24, 1996 to October 28, 1996, CSF and CAF jointly held the 5th International Conference on Plant MLO. Sixty-five experts and scholars from Italy, the United States, Australia, Japan, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and China attended the conference. The Society also held the 2nd International Conference on Chemistry and Utilization of Tree Extracts and the International Conference on Tree Physiology.
From June 12, 1997 to June 14, 1997, in order to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of CSF, CSF and the Canadian Society of Forestry co-hosted the International Conference on “Forestry for the 21st Century”. More than 100 forestry experts from China, Canada, the United States, Japan, Australia and other countries attended the conference.
In mid-August 2000, the Forest Ecosystems – International Conference on Ecology, Conservation and Sustainable Management was held in Chengdu. It was hosted by CSF and organized by the China Forest Ecology Branch. There were 100 delegates from 23 countries attended the conference 108 papers were submitted. In the conference, the research status of ecosystem management was summarized; the new research trends of this discipline were understood; and suggestions for strengthening the research of this discipline were put forward.
From May 13, 2001 to May 16, 2001, the Sino-Japanese International Conference on Ecological Environmental Protection and Forest Management in the 21st Century was held in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. More than 100 experts and scholars from China and Japan attended the conference. The delegates discussed hot and difficult topics of forestry in the 21st century, such as afforestation and seedling raising technology, ecological environment protection, forest construction and management, and forestry research and education. Eleven people including the Jiang Zehui, Vice President of CSF and President of CAF, Taitian Mengyan, President of the Japanese Society of Forestry and Professor of the University of Tokyo, gave a specially invited lecture. In order to cooperate with the implementation of develop-the-west strategy, to rebuild the beautiful western region with mountains and rivers, CSF and Japanese Society of Forestry jointly proposed afforestation on the conference. With the support of the Shaanxi Forestry Department and Xi’an Municipal People’s Government, the “Sino-Japanese Friendly Ecological Memorial Forest” was built in Weizao Delta of Xi’an on May 14, 2001. After the conference, the Society organized Japanese experts to participate in field investigation of soil erosion control and ecological environment construction in the Loess Plateau around Xi’an.
On August 19, 2002, the 2nd IUFRO Conference on Forest-tree Rust was held in Yangling, Shaanxi. It was co-hosted by CSF, the Northwest A&F University and IUFRO, and co-organized by Forest Pathology Branch of CSF, College of Forestry of Northwest A&F University and Shaanxi Society of Forestry. Nearly 60 delegates from home and abroad attended the conference. Participants conducted extensive exchanges and discussions on the morphology, taxonomy, pathology, epidemiology of pine blister rust, gall rust, poplar leaf rust and other tree rust and the tree rust management. Participants systematically analyzed the floristic differences of rust diseases in China, Japan and North America, and put forward constructive suggestions based on the characteristics of floras for reference.
In April 2006, the Chinese Society of Forestry, the Japanese Society of Forestry and the Korean Society of Forestry co-hosted the International Conference on the Role of Forests in Rural Development and Environmental Sustainability in Beijing. More than 100 experts and scholars from nearly 20 countries conducted in-depth exchanges on forest and rural economic development, social forestry, and environmental service function of forests. The conference was successful and highly praised by the superior leaders and participants from home and abroad. At the conference, the forestry societies of China, Japan and the ROK reached consensus on further in-depth cooperation and exchanges.
In 2008, CSF, BJFU and CAF co-organized the 23rd International Poplar Conference. On October 27, the conference was grandly opened in Beijing. More than 200 experts and scholars from more than 30 countries in Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia gathered in Beijing to study and explore the relationship between poplars and willows and human survival and development. Two hundred and forty-nine papers were received on the conference, involving poplar gene engineering and genetic breeding, molecular biology, poplar cultivation, management, wood processing, ecological environment protection of poplar and multi-resource utilization and other levels. The conference will focus on the application status and progress of poplar and willow industry in afforestation, the restoration of ecological environment by poplars and willows, application status and achievements of biomass energy and carbon sequestration in mitigation of climate change, poplar breeding, and biotechnology and forestry health development for a four-day exchange and discussion. In addition to the conference report, there were group exchanges and discussions on breeding, planting, industry and applications, plant diseases and insect pests and forest health, biotechnology, and biomass energy.
In 2010, CSF hosted the International Conference on Chemical and Biological Utilization of Biomass Resources 2010 (ICCUB 2010). Organized by the Institute of Chemical Industry of Forest Products, CAF and Nanjing Forestry University, the conference was successfully held in Nanjing from October 22 to 26. At the conference, the research trends and development trends in the fields of chemical utilization of biomass resources, green energy development and circular economy development were deeply discussed. Wang Tao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Song Zhanqian, Academician of CAE and Professor Jin-Suk Lee of Korea Institute of Energy Research were invited to give keynote speeches respectively, namely the research status of forest biomass energy resources in China, chemical industry and bio-industry of forest products, research status of biomass energy in Korea. In addition, more than 20 scholars and experts from foreign universities and research institutions such as Kyushu University, Kobe University, Meiji University, University of Provence in France, University of Athens in Greece, Southern Forestry Workstation in USA, North Carolina State University, University of California, Royal Institute of Technology, Korea Institute of Energy Research, Washington State University, University of Helsinki, and University of Canterbury attended the conference. At the same time, nearly 150 scholars from the Institute of Energy Conversion, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Southeast University, Beijing Forestry University, Northeast Forestry University, Guangxi University and other domestic colleges and universities attended the conference.
From June 26, 2011 to June 28, 2011, the International Conference for Bioeconomy co-hosted by 14 ministries and commissions including the Ministry of Science and Technology, Tianjin Municipal People’s Government and the former State Forestry Administration, and 5 international (regional) organizations including UNESCO was grandly held in Tianjin Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Center. CSF, ICBR, the Ecological Society of China and INBAR co-organized the sub-conference of “Biological Resources and Biodiversity”. Jiang Zehui, CSF President and Vice Chairman of the Academic Committee of the 2011 International Conference for Bioeconomy, Zhao Liangping, CSF Vice President and Secretary General, Shen Gui, CSF Deputy Secretary-General, and Jacoba Hoogendoorn (Gu Zhen), INBAR Director General, attended the sub-conference. Famous experts and scholars from CIFOR, WWF, University of Eastern Finland, INBAR, CAS and other domestic and foreign forestry colleges and universities and scientific research institutions made wonderful academic reports on the theme of “Biological Resources and Biodiversity”. More than 200 experts, teachers and students from CAF, Beijing Forestry University, ICBR, INBAR, Hebei Agricultural University, former Tianjin Municipal Bureau of Forestry, Tianjin University of Technology and other units attended the conference.
In 2015, CSF and CAF co-hosted the IUFRO Eucalypt Conference, which was the first Eucalypt Conference held by IUFRO in China. On October 21, the conference opened in Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province. The opening ceremony was presided over by Peng Youdong, Deputy Director of the former State Forestry Administration and CSF Vice President. Zhao Shucong, Deputy Director of the National Aflorestation Environmental Protection Commission and CSF President, and Michael Wingfield, IUFRO President, made speeches respectively. Many experts and academic elites in the field of international eucalypt research gathered at the conference. More than 360 experts, scholars and managers in the field of eucalypt cultivation, management, processing and utilization from 24 countries attended the conference. Four topics, namely, ecological and social benefit evaluation, new techniques of genetic breeding and seed breeding, cultivation and management, and forest health, were set up around the sustainable development of commercial forests of eucalypt. During the 4-day conference, Chinese and foreign experts and scholars gave 5 keynote speeches and 56 special reports, conducted extensive discussions and in-depth exchanges on eucalypt cultivation and industrial development, and shared the lasted achievements of international eucalypt research. At the conference, the Qi Shuxiong Eucalypt Found of China Green Foundation awarded the “2015 Outstanding Contribution Award of Eucalypt Development in China”. Seven people including Dong Hanming and Xu Daping won the award.
In 2016, CSF, as a co-organizer, jointly held the 2016 IUFRO Asia-Pacific Conference in Beijing with CAF, and organized the third parallel session - the 4th Forest Science Forum. The theme of the conference was: Forests for Sustainable Development – Role of Research. There were eight topics, namely: (1) Sustainable forest management for ecological service improvement; (2) Forest landscape restoration and reconstruction; (3) Desertification control, disaster and risk management, and climate change mitigation and adaptation; (4) Artificial forests and green economy; (5) Technological innovation in biomass energy, biomass materials and other products; (6) Urban forestry beneficial to human health and social well-being; (7) Socio-cultural functions of forests, including traditional knowledge, human health, social participation and gender roles; (8) Forest and agroforestry management that guarantee food security, improve the quality of life and provide non-wood forest products.
From April 20, 2017 to April 21, 2017, CSF and IUCN held the “Symposium on Ecological Approaches to Natural Disaster Risk Reduction” in Beijing. Li Dongsheng, CSF Deputy Secretary-General, made an opening speech. Nearly 40 delegates from China, France, India and Nepal attended the symposium. Experiences and achievements in ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation and natural risk reduction, and ecological disaster mitigation assessment were shared; the methods of further ecological disaster reduction in China, more effective use of ecological means and ecological engineering for disaster prevention and reduction were discussed in depth. It was an important reference for China to improve the awareness of disaster prevention and reduction, the ability to reduce losses from natural disasters and research direction.
Yin Yafang, Researcher of CAF Institute of Timber Industry, attended the IUFRO Division 5 (Forest Products) Conference held in Vancouver, Canada, from June 12 2017 to June 16, 2017. The conference was co-organized by the College of Forestry, University of British Columbia (UBC), SWST and FPI. The theme of the conference was “Innovation of Forestry Institutions for a Greener Future”. A total of 445 delegates from 49 countries and regions attended the conference, including 58 experts from China.
On August 26, 2017, Professor John Grace of the University of Edinburgh was invited to visit CAF. He discussed the field drought simulation experiment and experimental design observation, flux tower data processing, scientific innovation, and the restoration technology of subalpine forest in western Sichuan. On the morning of August 29, 2017, Ms. Shona Myers, President of INTECOL, was invited to give an academic report on the theme of “Ecology and Biodiversity of New Zealand” at the Research Institute of Forest Ecology, Environment and Protection, CAF.
On April 24, 2018, Peng Youdong, Deputy Director of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and Zhao Shucong, CSF President, met with foreign experts attending the “5th International Forest Science Forum and Forest Management Conference” in Beijing: Ms. Sophie de Bentzmann, Commissioner of Science and Technology of the French Embassy in China; Ms. Camille Musquar, Assistant Commissioner of Science and Technology of the French Embassy in China; Mr. Heinrich Spiecker, Professor of University of Freiburg, Germany; Mr. Alfred Pitterle, Associate Professor of the Institute of Forest Cultivation, BOKU, Vienna; Mr. Yves Ehrhart, Professor of AgroParisTech, France. In the presence of Peng Youdong, Deputy Director of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Professor Heinrich Spiecker, Professor Alfred Pitterle and Professor Yves Ehrhart were awarded the certificate of “CSF International Consultant Experts” by Zhao Shucong, CSF President.
From May 31, 2018 to June 1, 2018, the “International Symposium and Training on Oak Management and the Founding Conference of CSF Oak Branch” was held in Jiuhua Spa & Resort, Beijing. Chen Xingliang, Vice President and Secretary General of CSF, and Liu Min, representative of FPF, attended the opening ceremony and made speeches. During the opening ceremony, Chen Xingliang, Vice President and Secretary General, presented the certificate of “CSF International Consultant Experts” to Klaus von Gadow, former Director of the Institute of Forest Management and Harvest, University of Gottingen, Germany. During the conference, the members of the first council and the head of the Branch were elected in the Founding Conference of CSF Oak Branch. Zhao Xiuhai, Dean of the College of Forestry of Beijing Forestry University, was elected as the President of the first council of the Oak Branch. The symposium was organized around five topics, namely, how to establish oak management demonstration area, forest road construction in forest management, key technologies that should be paid attention to in oak management, biological characteristics of deciduous oak and management of oak forest in Northern China, how to compile harvesting scale and its application in oak management. On June 1, 2018, the delegates went to Xitaizi Village, Liulimiao Town, and Koutou Village, Qiaozi Town, Huairou District to conduct field research, discussion and training.
From July 7, 2018 to July 10, 2018, CSF sent an oak expert group to Benxi, Liaoning to assist the oak management, with the aim of spreading and popularizing oak resources and the importance of oak management, sharing the advanced concepts and technologies both at home and abroad. The expert assistance group included the well-known domestic and foreign oak and oak management experts and scholars, as well as the front-line practitioners with rich practical experience. The guidance method combining field and indoor research and discussion was adopted. On July 10, the “Forum on Oak Management and Development Countermeasures in Northeast China”. Chen Xingliang, Vice President and Secretary General of CSF, attended the change discussion of the forum. The experts shared the results of the previous research and had a full and heated discussion with the representatives on how to carry out oak management in the Eastern Liaoning.
From August 2, 2018 to August 4, 2018, the “Construction Guidance for Modern Forestry Science and Technology Demonstration Park and Site Meeting for Promotion of Oak Close-to-nature Plantation Construction in Rizhao” were successfully held in Rizhao. More than 40 experts and business representatives, including Zhao Shucong, former Director of the State Forestry Administration and CSF President, Liu Jungang, Vice Chairman of Shandong Committee of CPPCC and Director of Shandong Forestry Department, Wang Zhuxiong, former Director of Afforestation Department of the State Forestry Administration and Honorary President of CSF Oak Branch, Xu Shuli, Deputy Mayor of Rizhao, Shandong, Alfred Pitterle, Professor of University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria, Hui Gangying, Wang Yanhui, and Xu Jianli, Vice President of CSF Oak Branch, attended the site meeting. At the opening ceremony, Chen Xingliang, Vice President and Secretary General of CSF, on behalf of CSF, signed the “Agreement on the Co-construction of Oak Close-to-nature Plantation Demonstration Park” with Li Xiutang, General Manager of Rizhao Caimiao Seed Industry Technology Co., Ltd. At the enterprise sharing meeting on the afternoon of August 4, Chen Xingliang, Vice President and Secretary General of CSF, emphasized in his speech that oak enterprises should strengthen their ability of self-innovation, especially in the aspect of breeding of improved varieties. At the same time, he pointed out that oak enterprises should develop healthily and continuously under the normative standards in the future. On August 3, 2018, CSF organized experts to conduct the meeting evaluation on the scientific and technological achievement of CAF Forestry Institute, namely “Comprehensive Evaluation of Stand Status and Management Technology of Northwest Natural Forest”. The expert group listened to the report carefully and reviewed the relevant materials. After inquiries and discussions, they agreed that the achievement was original and reached the international leading level.
From August 21, 2018 to August 23, 2018, CSF organized well-known domestic and foreign oak experts to go to Liaoning to assist Shenyang Agricultural University in the construction of a demonstration model base of oak management. The oak model base was the first international-level model base of natural oak management. The experts included Professor Heinrich Spiecker, a world-renowned oak scientist and former Director of the Institute of Forest Management of the University, Freiburg, Germany, Michael Mussong, Professor of Eberswalde University, Germany, Hou Yuanzhao, Researcher of CAF, Wu Keyi, former Director of Harbin Forestry Bureau and Special Researcher of Research Institute of Forestry Policy and Information of CAF. Experts put forward valuable suggestions for the construction of the demonstration base, preliminarily determined the selection conditions and operation mode of sample plot for base construction, and indicated the demonstration objectives and direction for the construction of the demonstration base.
From September 12, 2018 to September 14, 2018, the Hangzhou International Conference on Forest Therapy in China hosted by CSF and Hangzhou Municipal People’s Government was held in Tonglu. More than 160 delegates (experts, scholars and practitioners in the field of forest rehabilitation) from China, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Finland, and Germany attended the conference. Centering on the theme of “Forest Therapy for a New Social Well-being”, the in-depth exchanges in the aspects of forest therapy and medical evidence, the development status and prospect of forest therapy, and the role and effect of relevant therapies in forest therapy were conducted on the conference.
On October 11, 2018, the “Oak - A Culture Trip in China”, co-hosted by CSF, IUCN CEC, IUFRO Oak Ecology and Forest Management Group and Shanxi Forestry Department, undertaken by Shanxi Society of Forestry and Shanxi Forestry Vocational Technical College, and organized by Shanxi Oak Culture Media Co., Ltd., was held in Shanxi Forestry Vocational Technical College, opening the first activity of oak culture on campus. Chen Xingliang, Vice President and Secretary General of CSF, Huang Shouxiao, Chief Planner of Shanxi Forestry Department, and Lu Guibin, President of Shanxi Forestry Vocational Technical College, attended the opening ceremony of Shanxi Station and made a speech. Li Dongsheng, CSF Deputy Secretary-General, presided over the opening ceremony. More than 150 delegates from various forestry colleges, scientific research institutions and forestry-related government departments in Shanxi participated in the event. Foreign experts from the University of Freiburg, Johannes Cruz Forest Service in Germany, ELTE in Hungary, IUCN and other institutions shared and exhibited the oak resources and utilization status in the world, Germany, Hungary, China and Shanxi Province from multiple perspectives and different levels.
From December 10, 2018 to December 12, 2018, the Founding Conference of “National Oak Innovation Alliance” and the High-end Conference on Oak Industry-University-Research Cooperation and Innovation Development were held in Jiangyou City, Sichuan Province. More than 120 oak experts, scholars and business representatives, including Chen Xingliang, Vice President and Secretary General of CSF, Li Dongsheng, CSF Deputy Secretary-General, Wu Hongjun, Director of the Science and Technology Department of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, Wang Zhuxiong, Director of Expert Committee of Engineering and Technology Research Center for Forest Management of National Forestry and Grassland Administration and Honorary President of CSF Oak Branch, Luo Jianguo, Inspector of Sichuan Forestry and Grassland Bureau, Jing Ge, member of the Party Group of Sichuan Association for Science and Technology and Director of Sichuan Science and Technology Museum, Jiang Liu, Deputy Secretary and Mayor of Jiangyou Municipal Committee, attended the conference. Future market analysis was conducted on the international import and export of oak, oak carbon, cork, oak fungus, culture and other aspects. Oak-related enterprises shared their experiences. After the conference, the representatives conducted the field research on the natural secondary forest of coniferous and broad-leaved mixed oak in Jiangyou.
From September 22, 2019 to September 26, 2019, CSF organized Mr. Burkhard Steckel, Director of Johannes Cruz Forest Service in Germany and oak management expert, to visit the demonstration model base of oak management in Qingyuan County, Liaoning Province to investigate the construction of the demonstration base. He inspected and evaluated the completion of the investigation and management of the demonstration base in 2018 and gave detailed guidance for the next step. On the afternoon of the 24th, at the invitation of Qingyuan Natural Resources Bureau, Mr. Burkhard Steckel opened a training class on forest management and oak forest renewal technology, providing theoretical and technical guidance for future management.
From October 17, 2019 to October 20, 2019, CSF organized Mr. Liu Bosen, Academician of Academy of Sciences Malaysia, and Li Junqing, Professor of Beijing Forestry University, to attend the Forum on Ecological Construction and Forest Park Development in Changchun City, Jilin Province. The forum was hosted by Jilin Society of Forestry and co-organized by Forest Park Branch of Jilin Society of Forestry and Jilin Forestry Survey and Planning Institute. The forum centered on the theme of “Ecological Construction of Forestry and Forest Park Development in the New Era”. Relevant leaders and specially invited experts, as well as members of Jilin Forest Park Branch, planners and designers of forest park management and ecological protection and restoration of forestry were invited to attend the forum.
From November 5, 2019 to November 7, 2019, the “2019 International Oak Conference” was held in Rizhao City, Shandong Province. The theme of the conference was oak diversity and its modern application. The main contents included oak biotechnology, genetic breeding of oak, oak seedling production and afforestation, oak ecology and management, etc. It was co-hosted by CSF and Salong Agriculture and co-organized by CSF Oak Branch, National Oak Innovation Alliance, Shandong Society of Forestry and Shandong Seedling Association. Nearly 150 representatives, experts and scholars from scientific research institutions, enterprises and institutions in Germany, Austria, Portugal, Japan and all over the country attended the conference.
