The “Science and Technology Awards of Liang Xi” was established by Chinese Society of Forestry in 2004 with the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology. It faces the whole country and represents the highest level of science and technology in China’s forestry industry.
Mr. Liang Xi is an outstanding patriot, a famous forester, educator and social activist in China. He was the first Minister of Ministry of Forestry Land Reclamation in New China. He enjoyed high prestige in scientific and technological circles and forestry in China. As early as 1985, Mr. Zhou Guangrong, a Thai Chinese student of Mr. Liang Xi, donated RMB 100,000 to set up the Liang Xi Award of Chinese Society of Forestry. In order to expand the scope and scale of the Liang Xi Award, after the cancellation of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the government department, the Chinese Society of Forestry established the Liang Xi Science and Technology Award in 2004 on the basis of the original Liang Xi Award of Chinese Society of Forestry.
The Science and Technology Awards of Liang Xi include four awards: Forestry Technology and Science Awards of Liang Xi, Best Article Awards of Liang Xi, Outstanding Talents Awards of Liang Xi, and Popularization of Forestry Science Awards of Liang Xi. It is mainly used to reward outstanding scientific and technological achievements, excellent academic papers and science popularization works in forestry, and to commend scientific and technological workers who have made outstanding contributions in scientific research teaching of forestry, outstanding students in forestry colleges and universities, and advanced forestry science popularization workers and collectives.
1. Forestry Technology and Science Awards of Liang Xi
The Forestry Technology and Science Awards of Liang Xi include the Natural Science Awards, the Technical Invention Awards, the Science and Technology Progress Awards and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Awards. It shall be awarded once a year. The certificates and bonuses will be awarded to the main contributors of the awarded achievements. Since the establishment of the Science and Technology Awards, the Forestry Technology and Science Awards of Liang Xi have been awarded for ten times, more than 700 projects have been awarded this award, among which 38 projects have been awarded the first prize.
On January 19, 2020, the Science and Technology Awards Ceremony of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration was grandly held in Beijing to commend and reward the teams that won the Second Prize of the State Science and Technology Awards for Science and Technology Progress, the First Prize of the Forestry Technology and Science Awards of Liang Xi for Technological Invention and Scientific and Technological Progress in 2019. Development of Key Technologies for Green Manufacturing and Application of Wooden Activated Carbon

The Project Team innovatively studied the scientific problems and basic theories in the green manufacturing technology of activated carbon by using the raw materials such as fruit shells and residues in bamboo and wood processing, and created and made breakthroughs in a series of key technologies. In this project, key technologies for green manufacturing and application of wood activated carbon were developed, which solved the “stuck neck” problem restricting the clean production of activated carbon, and changed the industrial status quo of China’s traditional activated carbon preparation process with high pollution and high energy consumption. The energy-saving and emission-reducing effect was remarkable, which realized the high-value green processing and utilization of biomass resources and produced good environmental benefits. The energy-storing activated carbon, carbon-based catalyst and VOCs-dedicated activated carbon created are widely used in new energy, environmental protection, medicine, chemical industry and other industries, breaking the situation that such high-end activated carbon products rely on imports.
Multi-objective Management Theories and Key Technologies of Natural Secondary Forest in Northeast China

The Project Team took the secondary forest formed after the disturbance of the broad-leaved korean pine forest in Northeast China as the object. In 2015, the Project Team published Research on Ecological Forest Logging, the first academic works on ecological logging, which formally proposed the concept of “ecological logging”. After more than 20 years of joint scientific problem tackling, on the basis of the research of more than 600,000 trees in more than 200 hectares sample plots, many bottlenecks in the key core technologies for multi-target management of secondary forests have been broken through.
Research on the Key Technologies of Captive Giant Panda Reintroduction

In order to save the endangered small wild population of giant pandas, the Research Team of China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda has been engaged in the wildness training and reintroduction of captive giant pandas since 2003, and has achieved fruitful research results to fill in the gaps in the reintroduction research of large carnivore, lay the scientific foundation for the ex-situ conservation of giant pandas, promote the scientific research on the reintroduction of large mammals, and promote the construction process of Giant Panda National Park to a certain extent.
Key Technologies for Lightweight and Value-added Manufacturing of Bamboo Fibrous Composites for Construction and Transportation

The utilization of bamboo resources and material advantages in China is insufficient. Bamboo fibrous composite products have the problems of high density and low value added. With the support of the National Sci-Tech Support Plan, the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan, together with 7 advantageous domestic institutions, focused on the demand for lightweight and value-added development in the field of green building materials and transportation in China. After more than 10 years of joint research, they have developed key technologies such as average increment and weight reduction, and made major breakthroughs in scientific theoretical research, innovative technology development and industrial application.
Research and Demonstration on Source-sink Characteristics of Camellia Oleifera and Germplasm Creation and High-efficiency Cultivation

Taking the improvement of photosynthetic products accumulation and oil conversion rate as the breakthrough, the Project Team innovatively applied the crop source-sink theory to systematically study the intrinsic mechanism and regulatory mechanism of camellia oleifera, such as the source-sink characteristics, the utilization of light energy, the transportation and distribution of assimilates, the fruit growth and oil accumulation, revealed the relationship between camellia oleifera yield and quality, and constructed camellia oleifera source-sink theory and application technology system; created new germplasm with high oil content and high yield through hybridization and marker-assisted selection to improve breeding efficiency; developed a high-efficiency cultivation technology system with source-sink regulation to improve the theoretical basis and technical level of high-yield cultivation of camellia oleifera.
Key Preparation Technologies of Biomass Polyol Function Materials

From the perspective of high-value utilization of biomass polyol, the Project Team constructed key synthetic technology systems of biomass polyol such as directional hydrogenation reduction, graft polymerization and microfluidics, carried out the research on water treatment agents, bacteriostatic materials, phase-change materials and adsorbing materials of functional, intelligent and structured series of polyol. The research solved the problems of low chemical reactivity and single product of larch tannin, developed a new way for the preparation and utilization of honeycomb carbon materials from biomass waste resources; promoted the industrial application of highly efficient and degradable intelligent and sensitive biomass polyol resin materials, and produced significant economic and social benefits.

3. Best Article Awards of Liang Xi
In order to encourage the truth-seeking and innovation spirits, and to accelerate the growth of young scientific workers in forestry, the Society set up the Best Article Awards of Liang Xi in the Science and Technology Awards of Liang Xi. The Best Article Awards of Liang Xi shall be held every two years. Since 2006, it has been held for seven times. More than 1,100 papers have been awarded, 87 of which were the first prize.
4. Outstanding Talents Awards of Liang Xi
In order to encourage forestry college students to establish the scientific spirit of “dedication, innovation, truth-seeking, collaboration” and promote their all-round development, the Outstanding Talents Awards of Liang Xi were set up according to the Management Measures for Liang Xi Science and Technology Education Fund. The Outstanding Talents Awards of Liang Xi have no ranking. It is held once a year and held a total of nine times, with more than 400 students being awarded the award.
